Oskar Barnack ( 1879 – 1936) was a German optical engineer, precision mechanic, industrial designer and the father of 35 mm photography. In 1911, Barnack was in charge of microscope research for Ernst Leitz at Wetzlar, Germany. He was an enthusiastic photographer, but the heavy equipment of the day was difficult for him to handle due to his poor health. Therefore he decided to develop a small format fine camera. In 1912, he constructed the first 35 mm camera – Ur-Leica which unleashed a revolution in photography.
