David Douglas Duncan (Born January 23rd 1916 in Kansas City, Missouri) is a US American photojournalist. Duncan joined the Marine Corps and become a combat photographer in World War II, in Korea and Vietnam War. His wartime photographs were very impressive. Perhaps some of his most famous photographs are those of Pablo Picasso, which have been published in several books. From December 1955, four specimens of the Leica M3D were manufactured in a black paint finish. They were engraved M3D-1, M3D -2, M3D -3 and M3D -4 and are considered to be the forerunners of the famous Leica MP of 1957, as they first combined the design of the Leica M3 with a coupling to the Leicavit un Duncans request. Leica M3D-2 was sold at 15 million HK Dollars in an auction several years ago.
In 2014 Leica was celebrating “100 Years of Leica Photography”. At the end of this special anniversary year, David Douglas Duncan was nearing the completion of his 99th year and to celebrate this occasion, Leica had manufactured a new special edition of the Leica M3D exclusively for Lars Netopil Classic Cameras (Wetzlar). As initiated by David Douglas Duncan, only 16 sets of these fully mechanical film cameras were made from M3D-5 to M3D-20. The special number of this set is M3D-16 (#4915016), it comes with a Summicron-M 2/50mm (#4321016) and Leicavit (#01949), complete set and in brand new condition. The edition also contains a gelatine silver print of the DDD photograph "Picasso holding the snow owl mask" (24X36 cm), signed by Duncan and from an edition of 16 prints, exclusively for this Leica M3D Edition.
