Auction, the pioneering international premium pu’er tea auction house, concluded
its Spring Sale 2021 on 29 May. Thanks
to the support from seasoned and new collectors, the selections of the sales
were well-responded, of which the sale of Vintage Pu’er Tea and Premium Tea saw particularly
active bidding in the room, on the telephone and online. Pre-eminent Hao- and Yin-grade
pu’er tea cakes led the sale – A Stack of Blue Mark
Pu’er Tea Cake, Circa 1950s sold for HKD3.41 million* above the high estimate,
while Two Pieces of Red Mark Pu’er Tea Cake, Circa 1950s sold for almost
HKD2.01 million also above the high estimate. Teas
from the 1980s also achieved impressive results – Seven Pieces of 8582 Pu’er Tea Cake in Thin Wrapping,
Circa Late 1980s, and A Stack of 8582 Pu’er Tea Cake in Thick Wrapping, Circa
1980s both sold for approximately HKD1.6 million respectively. The sales of Teawares
and Agarwood and Delicacies and
Moutai Wine were also held on the same day.

After weathering a process of naturalistic
aging for more than seven decades, the tea is rich and full in aroma, the
exterior delicately imbued with a chestnut red that appear luminous. The brewed
tea multi-dimensional in aftertaste, further accented with a subtle mellowness
that is not too overbearing.

The Blue Mark Pu’er tea cakes are commonly
wrapped in handmade Yunnan cotton paper, inscribed with its categorical
characters but its trademark ticket does not specify its production location.
The raw materials used to produce the limited Blue Mark Pu’er tea cakes were
harvested from the six great tea mountains in the Menghai County of
Xishuangbanna. This category of tea is generally believed to be a product of the
Xiaguan Tea Factory around the 1950s. The surface of the tea cake is slightly
curved, reminiscence of the shape of a bowl and exhibits the colour of a dark
luminosity.

The 8582 pu’er tea cake
with thin wrapping has a well-rounded exterior. The well-pressed tea cake
interspersed with intricately-weaved tea leaves of exquisite quality and
refinement, where the magnificence fragrance of the tea remains detectable
through its thin wrapping. This exquisite pressed tea is blended with a unique
mix of varying thickness of grade five to eight new and old teas, of which
grades three to four constitute the top layers while the grade five to eight
are blended within the interior, with increments of grade seven and eight tea
being the most substantial. The quality of the 8582 pu’er Tea Cake is
well-documented, making it one of the most coveted mid-age seven-son tea
products.
