【Highlights from the Sale of Vintage
Pu’er Tea and Premium Tea】
Hao- and Yin-grade pu’er teas of 60 to 100 years of history
Vintage pu’er tea is like vintage wine – the substantiality grows as the tea ages. This season, L&H will offer the best of the quintessential Hao- and Yin-grade teas, the highlight of which is an extremely rare and fine vintage ‘Song Pin Hao’ Blue Trademark pu’er tea cake, circa 1920s (Est: HKD 1 – 1.6 million). ‘Song Pin Hao’ is on a par with other legendary Hao-grade teas such as ‘Fu Yuan Chang’, ‘Xiang Zhe Xing’ and “Shuang Shi Tong Qing”, and is considered the King of Pu’er Tea. The present example features a clear and bright broth colour and lingering aroma. The sale will also offer the most sought-after Yin-grade tea – 2 pieces of Red Mark Pu’er tea cakes from the 1950s (Est: HKD1.2 – 2 million). Red Mark pu’er is a famous aged, fermented Chinese tea very much sought-after in the market nowadays. They are charismatic and aromatic ‘drinkable antiques’. Other prominent examples include 'Gam San Lau' Red Mark pu’er tea cake without wrapping, circa 1950s, Grade A and B Blue Mark pu’er tea cakes, circa 1950s, Blue Mark discus pu’er tea cakes and Yellow Mark Pu’er tea cakes, circa 1960s as well as Yellow Mark discus pu’er tea cakes from the 1970s.
Legendary Seven Sons Raw Tea Cakes
Seven Sons Raw Pu’er Tea Cakes will be the next big
thing after the vintage Hao- and Yin-grade teas. The use of the
best raw materials, the unique tea leave formula and fermentation and pristine
storage condition altogether makes Seven Sons tea cakes highly desirable. They
are very much coveted in the market in recent years, in particular 7542, 8582
and 88 raw tea cakes. With the current strong
demand and high consumption, their value is expected to soar continuously
rather than the reverse. After decades
of vintage, they are fiercely aromatic now, and possess ever-evolving aftertastes. This sale, a Stack
of 8582 pu’er tea cake in thick wrapping,
1980s (Est: HKD 800,000 – 1.5 million), 7 pieces of 8582 in thin wrapping (Est: HKD700,000 – 1.2 million) and 7
pieces of 88 raw pu’er tea cake (Est: HKD 600,000 – 1.1 million) will be leading the sale. Household names such as 7542, 73 pu’er tea
cake, circa 1980s, ‘Xue Yin’, Rose 'Dayi' (1996), Water Blue Mark, to name a
few, will also be available.
Investment-grade new teas from the
2000s
Chinese pu’er tea collectors from all generations are eyeing on the potential and investment value of new teas from the 2000s. This season, L&H will present 6 Stacks of ‘Dayi’ Xuanyuan Hao pu’er tea cake, 2017 (Est: HKD 1.2 – 2 million), 2 Stacks of Golden ‘Dayi’ pu’er tea cake, 2003 (Est: HKD 400,000 - 600,000) and 2 Stacks of 'Wu Jin Hao' pu’er tea cake, 2005 (Est: HKD 480,000 – 600,000).
More premium Chinese teas
Apart from pu’er tea, L&H also assembled other premium Chinese teas including a bag of old Dong pu’er loose tea 7022 from the 1960s (Est: HKD380,000 – 600,000). Famous old loose tea from the 1950s to the 1960s include Dong, Wan and Liao Fu which were sold through the then establishments. After 60 years of vintage, these loose tea display a special broth and taste. Also on offer is Liu’an tea - one of the favourites of the Qing imperial - 6 pieces of Liu’an from the 1920s (Est: HKD 600,000 – 1 million) of impeccable condition and provenance. A Stack of 'Chung Cha' Brand pu’er tea cake in simplified Chinese characters, circa 1970s (Est: HKD320,000 – 500,000), on the other hand, is a representative product by Xia Guan Tea Merchant, being coined as the continuation of Blue Mark discus tea cakes from the 1950s.
